For the first time in nearly 10 years, Iowans are mixing things up when it comes to their favorite spirits.

Tito's Handmade Vodka unseated Black Velvet Canadian Whiskey as Iowans’ favorite liquor, according to the annual report from the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division.

Black Velvet, owned by distiller Heaven Hill, had held the No. 1 spot since 2012. Now it slipped to No. 2.

Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum, Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey, and Hawkeye Vodka rounded out the top five on the annual list of top sellers, as they did in 2021.

Iowa brands that topped the list include Grimes’ own Blue Ox Vodka, which retained its top position, followed by Clive-based Gotcha Vodka, which overtook Cedar Ridge Bourbon from Swisher, Cumming’s Swell Vodka, and then Prairie Fire Whiskey from Cumming.

In the 2022 fiscal year, Iowans spent a record high $431 million, a 3.6% increase in total revenue over the 2021 fiscal year, according to the ABD report. Of that, $119 million will be transferred to the state’s general fund.

How much beer and wine were sold in 2022?

In total, licensed establishments across Iowa sold 72.9 million gallons of beer and 4.76 million gallons of wine, including 1 million gallons of Iowa beers and 127,687 gallons of local wines.

Polk County ranked first in the amount of liquor sold with $100.4 million in liquor sales. Linn County ranked second with $36.6 million in sales. Scott County ranked third with $29.2 million in sales, and Johnson County came in fourth with $24.8 million in sales.

During the fiscal year 2023, the division will continue work on its licensing portal, GovConnect, a four-year-long project helmed in partnership with the Iowa Department of Revenue that began in 2021.
