Long Island man, 71, dies after SUV crashes into truck on State Road 7 near Delray Beach

DELRAY BEACH — A 71-year-old New York man died Tuesday night after crashing his car into a semi-truck on State Road 7 west of Delray Beach, according to a Palm Beach Sheriff's Office crash report.

Dennis Ferguson of Hempstead, N.Y., died at the scene, north of Atlantic Avenue near Pero Family Farms, PBSO said.

The crash also critically injured a 73-year-old woman riding in the passenger seat of Ferguson's Honda CRV.

Ferguson was southbound on State Road 7 at about 6:30 p.m. when he "failed to observe" a Freightliner that was turning northbound onto the road from a truck depot near Pero Family Farms, PBSO said.

The compact SUV collided with the bottom of the truck's trailer, according to the crash report.

Paramedics took Ferguson's passenger to Delray Medical Center. The driver of the truck, a 36-year-old man from Lake Mary, was not injured. The crash report does not indicate that he is facing charges.
