If you've seen the show "Long Island Medium" on the TLC network, you're pretty much ready for Theresa Caputo's visit to El Paso.

Caputo, known for her show during which she does readings and connects with the spirits of deceased loved ones, will return to El Paso with a "Theresa Caputo Live! The Experience!" show Wednesday at the Plaza Theatre.

In a telephone interview, Caputo joked that her live show is pretty much like her television show, except without the shopping. She has toured with her show for 10 years.

"People will ask what it's going to be like, but it's literally like watching 'Long Island Medium' live. I come out on stage and give a quick little speech on how I connect with the dearly departed and what people can expect for the next two hours."

"Once I start sensing or feeling spirit, I do not stay on the stage. No matter where you're seated in the venue, you'll be able to feel and see and witness all of these readings up close and personal," she said.

Caputo said there is no way for people to prepare for an evening with her. And while most people walk in, hoping to be the one that has that special connecting moment, they never really expect it to happen to them.

"We all walk in the theater with the hopes of wanting to hear from our beloved departed loved ones. And it's almost like when that moment happens, the person becomes almost like a deer in headlights," she said.

Caputo said it's better for people to come with an open mind and heart and no expectations.

"The experience is so much more than me communicating with people who have died," she said. "Spirit is constantly restoring faith; sometimes it's restoring faith of religion. Sometimes it's restoring faith in ourselves and faith that everything is going to be OK.

"And that no matter what's happening, we can move forward in life with happiness and joy. That is the thing that spirit encourages us to do it. It very overwhelming; and just so many layers to it," she said.

"Long Island Medium" Theresa Caputo has had her show about being a medium for 14 seasons.

Caputo said she knows some people are skeptical or think what she does is crazy.

"Someone might come to the show and might feel that some messages might be universal. And that's the thing that I love about readings. They have me relay things in a way that everyone can connect with it and apply to their healing and grieving process."

Caputo said she is able to validate the connection to the person by bringing up something unique to that person, or that brings a memory of a happier time or something that reflects the personality of the person before they died.

Caputo said she doesn't communicate with spirits in the way that humans communicate. She sees signs and symbols that she knows that the spirit conveys or she feels things, which means she can communicate with spirits even if they didn't know English. It's a good-to-know tidbit for those who live in El Paso and might have deceased loved ones who spoke only Spanish.

Caputo said many people feel guilty when they have not been able to be with a person during their last moments ‒ which touches upon why she does what she does. Though she struggled with her gift until her 30s, she says she wants everyone to know that when they feel or sense a spirit around them, it is surely that.

"I've learned that unfortunately no matter how someone dies, whether someone dies young or old, we here in the physical world are left with burdens and guilt, what if's and only if's. ... At the end of the day, all of those negative emotions do not give us the ability to heal.

"That's why the experience is about healing. It's about spirit giving us what we want, not what we need, to experience in those moments," she said.
