Long Island Officials Using Art To Encourage Residents, Tourists To Attract More Business

Long Island officials are rolling out the welcome mat, encouraging residents and tourists to visit shops and boutiques for Small Business Week. It's all to help boost the local economy, and it starts with art; CBS2's Natalie Duddridge reports.

NATALIE DUDDRIDGE: This mural, the Long Beach Osprey Wings unveiled by artist Kara Hublin was inspired by the official bird of Nassau County. And inside its wings images of popular destinations on both the North and South shores.

KARA HOBLIN: We picked like key elements different places on Long Island that are landmarks either historical or places you can visit.

NATALIE DUDDRIDGE: Like Belmont racetrack, Jones Beach, the Nassau County Museum of Art, and the Fire Island Lighthouse. The mural was designed not only to attract more people to come check out the Long Beach boardwalk where it's painted, but the other destinations featured.

KRISTEN REYNOLDS: It's so exciting that restrictions are being lifted, things are starting to open, and we have so much to see and do right here in our own backyard.

NATALIE DUDDRIDGE: That's exactly the message to get out of your home enjoy the weather and shop and eat local.

LAURA CURRAN: To attract more business to our down towns. We know that of every dollar spent in your local downtown $0.66 stays in the communities.

NATALIE DUDDRIDGE: And every dollar counts for business owners still recouping from the pandemic.

CLIFF SKUDIN: Having the tourism. It really was effective you know as far as you know our main attraction the boardwalk.

CHRISTINE O'CONNOR: Lately it's starting to come back a little bit little by little. You know we're getting very excited because usually mural day is our big sendoff to the summer.
