Long-term COVID-19 case count drops below 1,000 mark locally

Jun. 2—For the first time since mid-October, fewer than 1,000 residents in the region were diagnosed with COVID-19 during the previous two weeks, state Department of Health data released Wednesday shows.

The number of people either confirmed through tests or considered probably positive for the virus dropped to 972 in the previous two weeks, down from 1,048 a day earlier. Oct. 13, when the total two-week case count for the region was 986, was the last time the two-week total dropped below 1,000.

The state two-week case count dropped to its lowest point, 13,341, since Oct. 5, when it stood at 13,395.

The Department of Health on Wednesday announced 580 new cases, increasing the total to 1,203,443.

The decline in deaths continues to lag. The two-week regional death toll dropped to 18, the lowest since 16 on Oct. 30.

The two-week state count dropped to 334, the lowest since Nov. 4 when it was 328.

The department reported another 45 deaths, raising the total to 27,259. Two deaths occurred in the region, raising the total to 1,854.

By county:

Lackawanna added three cases for 18,446 total, including 2,889 probable. One new death raised the total to 474.

Luzerne added 12 cases for 31,823 total, including 2,589 probable. One new death increased the total to 813.

Monroe added seven cases for 14,709 total, including 458 probable, and remained at 317 deaths.

Pike added one case for 3,993 total, including 432 probable, and remained at 54 deaths.

Susquehanna added seven cases for 2,641 total, including 347 probable, and remained at 62 deaths.

Wayne added one case for 4,105 total, including 436 probable, and remained at 80 deaths.

Wyoming added three cases for 1,979 total, including 351 probable, and remained at 54 deaths.
