Long-time Hillcrest Grange members honored

During Hillcrest Grange’s 106th anniversary program Sept. 7, two of its long-time dedicated members were honored. F. Carl Walker received a 60-year membership seal for his “Golden Sheaf Certificate.” Virginia Hay received her Golden Sheaf certificate for 50 consecutive years of membership.

Theme for the program held at the Berlin Area Historical Society was “Dusting off the Memories,” led by the program director David R. Hay. Carl Walker, Hillcrest’s President/Master, described several of the dusty jobs that he was involved in during yesteryear farming activities in Summit Township. He told about the enjoyable times spent with other farmers on their work circuit as they went around to different farms to assist with threshing activities.

He recalled his heaviest dusty activities were derived during threshing days when the straw was being blown into the mows. He worked in the mows forking straw evenly during that dusty activity. Another extremely dusty remembrance came when harrowing newly plowed ground as wind blew dust across the fields.

Virginia Hay, Hillcrest’s secretary, dusted off memories of 1972 when she joined the Hillcrest Grange before her marriage. She remained active through the years as chaplain, secretary, helping on various committees, and assisting her husband in planning many programs.
