Longmont Latinos/Latina Voices to host scholarship fundraiser

Apr. 23—The Longmont Latinos/Latina Voices will host a dance May 7 to raise money for college scholarships for community youth, in the names of two young men who died in 1980.

The Cordova/Garcia Scholarship Event will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, 2210 Pratt St. The dance will feature the sounds of New Mexico and oldies music, played by Chicano Heat, according to a Longmont Latinos/Latina Voices news release.

The release said the event honors the lives of Jeff "Beaver" Cordova and Juan Louis Garcia, both 21, who died in a Longmont police shooting on Aug. 14, 1980. After the young men's deaths Latino community members rallied to form El Comité de Longmont, a social justice nonprofit.

The Longmont Latinos/Latina Voices is an organization with the purpose of helping Latino/Latina youth.

Tickets to the dance cost $20. They can be purchased by contacting Vic Vela at 303-587-3495 or mr.victor.vela@gmail.com, or Marta Moreno at 303-684-6746 or martaburris1@gmail.com.
