Longtime crop artist selected to create 2023 commemorative artwork for Minnesota State Fair

A longtime crop artist has been selected to create the official artwork to commemorate the 2023 Minnesota State Fair.

Liz Schreiber, who has been creating and teaching the craft of seed art for two decades, plans to produce a piece featuring “vintage-inspired imagery of timeless elements of the fair,” she said in a news release issued Tuesday by State Fair officials.

“I’m honored to create the 2023 commemorative artwork,” Schreiber said. “For me, the Minnesota State Fair represents my love affair with Minnesota itself and all it has to offer.”

Her commemorative artwork will be unveiled in June at the State Fairgrounds.

Schreiber’s crop artworks, which are primarily portraits of celebrities and fictional characters, are made using natural-colored seeds. Several have won first place in the amateur division at past State Fairs, according to CropArt.com.

“My career as a freelance artist has been deeply enriched by my crop art creations submitted to the fair’s competition,” she said. “And over the years, I have been fortunate to share my love of crop art by teaching how-to classes, as well as creating crop art commissions for numerous publications.”

Schreiber, who moved to the Twin Cities in the 1990s to attend the University of Minnesota, entered her first crop art competition at the State Fair in 2004, according to a 2017 profile in the Growler magazine.

Her freelance artwork, which spans several mediums, has been exhibited in local galleries.

Several well-known local artists have been tapped to create the State Fair’s official commemorative artwork since its debut in 2004, including Leslie Barlow, Kevin Cannon and Adam Turman.
