Longtime member of Sangamon County Board resigns to focus on real estate business
One of the longest-serving members of the Sangamon County Board is resigning.
Todd Smith announced his intentions to step down after 16 years of service. The announcement was made Thursday.
He planned to focus on his commercial real estate business.
Smith had not filed to run in District 2. The general election is Nov. 8.
In a statement, Smith thanked his constituents for their support and encouragement.

"During my time on the board, I saw the daily work in our county and the dedication of our county employees to provide quality services to our community," Smith said. "I am thankful for the relationships and the positive change and growth we brought to Sangamon County."
Smith currently serves as chairman of the public health committee and as a member of the finance committee. He previously served as chair of collective bargaining and community resources.
"On behalf of the Sangamon County Board, I want to thank Todd for his 16 years of service," said board chairman Andy Van Meter. "He has always proven to be thoughtful, respectful and willing to take on challenges when they arise. There is no doubt that Todd will be missed, and there will be big shoes to fill when replacing him on the board."
The board office has begun accepting applications to fill the vacancy. The application period will close at 5 p.m. Friday, May 27. The vacancy will be filled by appointment at the June 14 board meeting.

Applicants should submit a resume and cover letter to the Sangamon County Board Office, which is located in the Sangamon County Complex, 200 South Ninth St., Room 201, Springfield, Illinois. Applicants must be from the Republican Party. In addition, applicants must live within the district for which they are applying.
