The City of Lubbock on Wednesday announced Gregory Rushin, a former Plano police chief, has been appointed interim chief of the Lubbock Police Department effective Friday.

Rushin becomes the acting chief at the end of the business day Friday ahead of his expected confirmation by the Lubbock City Council on Tuesday.

The appointment comes after Chief Floyd Mitchell unexpectedly tendered his resignation Sept. 12. Mitchell, Lubbock's 23rd police chief and first Black chief, has served four years with the department. Neither Mitchell nor the city has publicly disclosed the reason for the chief's departure.

Rushin has more than 40 years of law enforcement experience, including 35 in the Plano Police Department and 18 years as its chief, according to the city's announcement. Rushin retired from the City of Plano as a deputy city manager in 2021.

"I am pleased to have Gregory Rushin serve as our Interim Police Chief," City Manager Jarrett Atkinson said in the statement. "His tremendous experience and proven track record will guide the Lubbock Police Department as we continue to move forward and honor our commitment to public safety."
