Longtime Sacramento-area antique store closing with ‘major discounts.’ What’s on sale?

After 18 years in business, an expansive Sacramento County antique mall is closing its doors.

Midway Antique Mall is located at 5130 Madison Ave. in Old Foothill Farms. Vintage items including jewelry, linens, clothing and furniture are stacked around the 30,000-square-foot department store, making shopping a virtual treasure hunt.

In a statement on Tuesday, owners Ann and Mark Saunders said they’ll miss their customers and are proud of the work they’ve done in the antique business.

The Saunders, previous court reporters in Sacramento, began careers as antique dealers in 1989 after years of collecting furniture and accessories, according to the store website.

The duo operated in three antique malls and have been exclusively selling their collection at Midway Antique Mall since 2006.

“Now into our 70s, with our last vacation in 2012 and our no-longer-a-puppy Yorkie Ike about to turn 8 years old, we are looking forward to some quality time off to enjoy our mid-century Eichler home and cars and each other,” the Saunders said in the statement.

The store will close on Jan. 21.

Sacramento-area antique mall holds retirement sale

Before Midway Antique Mall officially closes its doors, the Saunders are holding a retirement sale with what they called “major discounts.”

That includes deals on inventory that was previously not for sale — including fixtures, lighting and rugs — that now “need good homes,” the Saunders said.

Items for sale include authentic antique, mid-century or vintage items.

According to previous Sacramento Bee reporting, Midway opened during a weak economy and the rise of online shopping but the Saunders were confident in the survival of their business.

“There’s one reason Midway is going to succeed: the return to authenticity,” he said. “We’re putting the ‘antique’ back in ‘antique mall,’ “ Mark told The Bee in 2005.

Midway features spacious isles, dealer spaces, a seating area, large restrooms, a loading dock for furniture pickup, and vending machines and a water dispenser, according to its website.

The sale began Thursday and will continue through the last day of business.

Branded gift cards should be used by the closing date and layaway items should be picked up by then as well.

Midway Antique Mall is open noon to 6 p.m., Thursday through Monday, and closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
