Longtime Tarrant County commissioner won’t seek re-election in 2024

Longtime Tarrant County commissioner Gary Fickes will not seek re-election in 2024, he wrote in a press release Monday morning.

Fickes has represented Northeast Tarrant County on the court for 18 years. He served as Southlake’s mayor from 1989 to 1996.

“This has been the most incredible and rewarding job of my life,” Fickes wrote in the release. “Add ten years as Mayor of Southlake and Chairman of the Planning & Zoning Commission; what more could you ask for in public service?”

There are already candidates lining up to take Fickes’ spot. Tarrant GOP chair Rick Barnes is seeking election to the commissioners court, as are Fort Worth police spokesperson Jimmy Pollozani and former Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office chief of staff David McClelland.
