Longtime Wichita McDonald’s closes, but these unique locations offer more than Big Macs

A popular McDonald’s location open in Wichita for about 60 years closed this week, but residents won’t have go too far to get their Big Mac fix.

The restaurant, located at 1050 N Broadway, announced the closure by a posting on the door Tuesday. Franchisee Michael Lane said the decision to close was made by corporate officials, who also decided to close locations in Kingman and Anthony.

Wisconsin Dells, Wis.

This McDonald’s was named the 13th most beautiful McDonald’s in the world by Architectural Digest.

The location has a log cabin design, fully equipped with a large stone fireplace and a mounted moose head. A YouTube video from 2022 even shows an arcade.

Open from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m., according to Trip Advisor, this McDonald’s can be reached by plugging 2325 Wisconsin Dells Parkway, Wisconsin Dells, WI 53965 into your GPS.

Goshen, Ind.

Perhaps the grandest McDonald’s location, this truck stop in Indiana is designed to look like a castle and houses multiple amenities, including a McDonald’s.

Opened in 2014, the truck stop also includes a Subway and a retail convenience store. The building is 23,000 square feet and has 24 gas pumps, 12 of which are for passenger vehicles, according to Goshen News.

Chicago, Ill.

With Chicago home to the headquarters of McDonald’s, it only makes sense for it to have its own unique location.

A 19,000-square-foot restaurant opened in 2018 with a full service McCafe coffee bar and stocked with eco-friendly solar panels and plants, according to CBS Chicago. If you’re heading to Chicago anytime soon, make sure to stop by 600 N. Clark St.

Freeport, Maine

If you ever find yourself in the area and are craving a McChicken, you might want to swing by this location in Maine.

According to the Atlas Obscura, the town of Freeport wanted a McDonald’s location that didn’t stand out against the area’s aesthetic. Instead of building a new place to house the fast food restaurant, developers remodeled a home build in 1850 to create the unique McDonald’s.
