Look Back ... to plans being formulated for Anniston's 1948 Christmas parade
Oct. 17—Oct. 17, 1948, in The Star: Boasting 11 floats, a giant parade the night of Dec. 3 will once again open the Christmas season in Anniston. Plans for street and store lighting, a community tree and residential lighting are being made by a civic committee. W. H. Bibb is the general chairman of the event, while Ben Applebaum and Jack Routman are in charge of the business district's street and store lighting. Also this date: Opening today [Sunday] at the Calhoun Theater and playing through Wednesday is a comical Technicolor delight, Life With Father, starring William Powell as Clarence Day Sr. and Irene Dunne as his wife. Featured are young stars ZaSu Pitts and Elizabeth Taylor as houseguests in the Day household. Additionally: Dr. Waights G. Henry today will preach his final sermon as pastor of First Methodist Church in Anniston. Dr. Henry's pastorate began in 1934, setting standards of service and leadership for an entire generation of young Methodists.
Oct. 17, 1998, in The Star: The Retired Senior Volunteer Program celebrated 25 years of service the recent volunteer recognition program. Barbara Johnson is the RSVP director, and she joined around 200 volunteers and agency reps for an afternoon of celebration. Also this date: Habitat for Humanity of Calhoun County recently (Sept. 28) dedicated its first house built in Jacksonville. Located at 108 7th Ave. SE, the home gives shelter to Darlene Audy and her two sons. Mrs. Evelyn Douthit attended the home's "open house," dedicating it in memory of her late husband, Mayor George Douthit, who was instrumental in bringing Habitat for Humanity to Jacksonville.
