Look Back ... to plans for a paved highway north of J'ville, 1948
Nov. 4—Nov. 4, 1948, in The Star: The new state and federal two-lane highway extension between Jacksonville and Piedmont today seems assured of early construction, according to word from Gov. Jim Folsom's office. Construction plans have already been drawn for a 22-foot concrete road with dirt shoulders, and the right-of-way for it has been cleared. When the highway is completed, many new trade channels are expected to be opened up, business leaders say. Also this date: The State Board of Education approved budgets for seven state colleges today, one of them being Jacksonville State Teachers College, which was approved for a 1948-49 budget of $856,873.
Nov. 4, 1998, in The Star: The Oxford City Council made a few changes to its massage parlor ordinance yesterday to square parts of the law with a federal court order. A called meeting lasted just long enough for the council to amend sections of the ordinance regulating inspections of the parlors and to remove a section about health certification.
