A look at elections in Taylor County and beyond
A special option liquor election that would legalize the sale of all alcoholic beverages for off-premises consumption within Justice of the Peace Precinct 3 is before some Taylor County voters this fall.
Precinct 3 covers a wide swath of the southern part of the county.
The request stems from plans to build a Bowie's Travel Center northeast of Tuscola, near the split of U.S. Highways 83/84.
Construction is underway at the location.
The petition for the election required 779 valid signatures, said Freda Ragan, the county's elections administrator, in August.
It was returned June 28, and out of 1,086 signatures collected, 887 were deemed valid.
Two cities within the precinct already are “wet” − the city of Buffalo Gap, the result of a 2013 election, and the city of Tuscola, which held a local option election in May 2019. The results of this election will not supersede the existing status in those cities.
November’s ballot also contains an ordinance to declare the city of Abilene a “sanctuary city for the unborn,” a bond proposal to build a fire station and six amendments to the city’s charter.
Blackwell Consolidated Independent School District will have al bond election, as does Stephenville in Erath County.
The city of Hawley has two propositions for sales and use tax, including one to provide revenue for maintenance and repair of municipal streets.
And in Scurry County, the city of Snyder will have two propositions related to the Development Corporation of Snyder, authorizing sales and use tax for various purposes.
Early voting begins Monday.
