Look for discounts on 'long-haul' trips this Travel Tuesday: Hopper travel expert

There’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but if you’re hoping to score deals on travel, you might want to wait until Travel Tuesday, Dec. 3. For the last few years, airlines, hotels, tourist attractions and travel sites have set the day after Cyber Monday as one of the best days to score travel deals.

This year travel app Hopper has teamed up with multiple airlines such as Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, Fiji Airways and more to provide destination discounts.

“Aer Lingus is going to be offering deals all across Europe — Dublin, Paris, Rome. We're also seeing deals on other international destinations from Philippine Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways,” Liana Corwin, Hopper’s consumer travel expert, said on Yahoo Finance’s The Final Round. “A lot of international carriers are really trying to incentivize travelers to book those longer-haul, bucket list trips because you're able to get them for about 40% off or more on Travel Deal Tuesday.”

While the debate for the best day to book flights continues, Hopper touts Travel Tuesday as the “best day of the year to score travel deals.”

“A few years ago, the data science team behind Hopper was looking at our archive of over 30 billion daily price quotes. And we were actually looking for deals on Cyber Monday. And what they found is that there were more deals on Travel Deal Tuesday than Cyber Monday and Black Friday combined,” she said.

Price freeze

But what if you break your budget shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday? Corwin said Hopper recently launched a new feature to help. Price Freeze is like a virtual layaway for travelers. Users can apply a small deposit and then freeze a trip at a specific price-point for a short window of time (1 to 7 days).

Corwin warns that while Travel Deal Tuesday is a day full of discounts, you’re not likely to get deals for holiday travel itself. But, “you might get lucky,” said Corwin. “If you're looking to travel post-holiday season into the new year, those are the tickets you're going to get good deals on.”
