Take a look inside Perkasie's new Mystic Ways Brewing, a spot that taps into the senses

Perkasie’s Walnut Street is about to become more hopping with the opening of a new brewery.

Mystic Ways Brewing Co. will be debuting its line of beers at its grand opening celebration Saturday starting at 3 p.m.

Located in downtown Perkasie Borough, between Threddies and Modern Male Barbershop, the brewery is a family-owned business created and operated by Alice Krier and her daughter, Angie Winiarski, and son, Joe Winiarski.

Alice said opening the brewery was a dream 10 years in the making for their close-knit family after Joe received a gift that quickly turned into a passion.

“Angie and I got Joe a brew kit one year for Christmas and it just took off. He started brewing beer in the house consistently and just loved it,” said Alice. “A few years later, he built a small brewing system in his garage.”

Joe, who had been an ICU nurse, was then offered an opportunity to take on a second job as head brewer for McCoole’s at the Historic Red Lion Inn in Quakertown. Working at McCoole’s afforded Joe the chance to continue experimenting with beers and master his brewing technique.

It was after entering and winning a couple brewing competitions that Joe realized what he was doing really worked, and the same time he fell in love with the process.

“Every beer is different. You can always try new things with different beers and I’m still doing it to this day,” Joe said. “I’m always trying to find the perfect beer.”

“It was actually (Angie) who said we should try to do something because his beers are so good,” said Alice.

In 2020, the three decided to go into business together and create a space to showcase Joe’s talent for brewing. Perkasie turned out to be the perfect location, said Alice.

“Perkasie was very welcoming. Brewing beer is considered manufacturing and that’s why you’ll see a lot of breweries in industrial settings because of zoning in certain towns. But Perkasie has mixed-use zoning in their downtown. It was part of their structure to revitalize their downtown district and they’re very welcoming to new businesses,” she said.

Mystic Ways is not the only Walnut Street business to tap into the growing craft brewing trend.

It will be joining Free Will Brewing Co., a well-rooted establishment less than a mile down the road. And Van Lieus Brewing is gearing up to open in the near future as well. Alice said she’s encouraged by the support she’s received from both businesses as they prepared to open.

“We talked to the people at Van Lieus and the Free Will guys have been great and really helpful. Each one of us is very different too, which will be good,” she said.

For Mystic Brewing, their difference will be most obvious in its unique aesthetic that Joe described as stepping into “a psychedelic forest.”

Walking through the doors, customers will be greeted by a floor-to ceiling mural featuring an oversized three-dimensional neon mushroom. An art piece painted by Joe’s wife, Flopy D’Amelio, who said it was all about creating an experience beyond the beer itself.

“We just wanted to create something special for people besides the beers because the beers were awesome already. There’s some kind of magic in what (Joe) does. So, we kind of had to match the coolness of the beers. ” said D’Amelio.

To add to the feel, they handcrafted the bar top and tables with live edge wood and epoxy resin, a style they called river tables, each different in their own ways with details like shells, leaves, mushrooms, and other elements found in nature.

Angie said she is most excited to see people’s reactions when walking in for the first time.

“Everyone here all had thoughts and ideas, but once pen was put to paper, or paint was put to brushes and resin was put to wood, I don’t think we expected just how great it would turn out,” she said.

Mystic Ways will offer a rotating selection of beers across 10 taps, each which are brewed on site. Water, juices and soda will also be available.

The grand opening will feature three different IPA’s, three lagers, a porter, hefeweizen, fruited sour and imperial stout. In addition, they’ll have a cider from Blackledge Winery.

Eventually, they plan to offer cans to go, but for now customers can enjoy their beers on the spot with seating both inside and out.

They’ve also partnered with Perkasie Pizza to offer pizza slices, wraps and other appetizers until Mystic Ways opens its kitchen. Once the kitchen is set up, the menu will include paninis and other small bites.

For Krier, the opportunity to work with her kids is a gift.

“I feel fortunate to be able to have them as my business partners and to share this experience. We’ll be going through it all together. It’s a great gift to be able to share this with them,” said Krier.
