A look inside the Woolworth Theatre

Good morning, folks. Reporter Rachel Wegner here with your Daily Briefing.

The Woolworth Theatre is getting closer to its big debut — and business reporter Sherah Ndjongo took us inside for an exclusive first look. The theater, situated in a historic building in the heart of downtown, opens to the public on Oct. 1.

The space features a prominent display documenting the lunch counter sit-ins that Civil Rights activists staged in 1960. F.W. Woolworth, a five-and-dime store at the time, was among Nashville's first sit-in sites to protest segregation.

After the closing of downtown restaurant Woolworth on 5th, the historic building will reopen as Woolworth Theatre. The building is a registered historic site known as one of the first sites of the lunch counter sit-ins during the civil rights movement in Nashville,

The renovated space also includes a theater with 280+ seats, a VIP mezzanine level and a basement lounge called The Twisted Wool.

Heralded as the "first of its kind," the Woolworth will be home to everything from Tony-award winning acts to a "Shiners" show that includes circus performers, comedy, acting and dance.
