Take a look at the Streetsboro Community Center that could be coming to the city in 2023

A new community center tops Streetsboro's to do list for the new year, although architects recently warned council that the work might not be done until early 2024.

Streetsboro City Council got its first look at what the city's proposed community center will look like at a recent City Council meeting. Architects from Cleveland-based Levelheads Architects and Innovators presented council with several renderings of the proposed building, which had been redesigned and expanded at the urging of council.

The proposed building would be constructed at Streetsboro City Park, off Kirby Lane.

Levelheads CEO Christopher Trotta said the 7,400-square-foot building will seat 150 people when set up with tables and chairs, many more when the three rooms are configured differently. The building design was expanded by nearly 1,000 square feet to expand the capacity of the event space from 100 people.

"We're making exciting progress," he said.

The next step, Trotta said, is to have a construction manager present council with more detailed plans, including more precise cost estimates. The city previously said the cost for the current plan is about $3.1 million.

Once a construction manager in involved, he said, council will be able to fully evaluate what options to keep and which ones to cut, such as an expanded parking, an outdoor deck and a fireplace.

Trotta said the next presentation will probably take place in late February or March, with groundbreaking planned later in the spring. Construction might not be complete until early 2024, he warned, although the construction manager could provide a more detailed timeline.

"We don't want to rush through the design process," Trotta said. "We want to get this right."

Councilman Mike Lampa praised the design.

"I think you've done a great job," he said. "I love this."

Councilman Justin Ring agreed that the design shouldn't be rushed.

"We just want to do it right for the future," he said.

Last year, Streetsboro had envisioned a "City Complex" which was to include a new city hall, a field house and splash pad near the new fire station on Route 43, where the former city hall was located. But since then, the city decided to move the community center to the City Park property off Kirby Lane.

The parks department, including the senior center, have been housed from a building on state Route 43 since 2018, where the department moved when the old city building was demolished. The department recently moved to a temporary space at the Streetsboro schools annex until the community center is built.
