Texas has been pushing hard to land one of the top pass rushers in the transfer portal over the last few months.

TCU transfer Ochaun Mathis is rated the No. 2 edge rusher in the transfer portal according to 247Sports. He’s also the highest ranked overall player available as those ahead of him have enrolled or committed elsewhere.

Mathis was instantly linked to Texas after entering the transfer portal on Jan. 12 due to Gary Patterson joining the program. On Feb. 17, he released his top five schools of Texas, USC, Ole Miss, Penn State and Nebraska.

The Longhorns were finally able to get Mathis on campus over the weekend, and he was able to reunite with his former TCU head coach. It appears the visit went well, as Mathis quickly shared photo’s of his visit via Twitter.

In 2021, Mathis played in 12 games and recorded 45 total tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks with three passes defended. The year prior, he compiled an impressive 12.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks.

Considering Texas lacked a consistent pass rush last season, landing Mathis as an edge would be a massive win for Steve Sarkisian and his staff.
