Looking for affordable housing in SLO? Deadline for this apartment lottery closes soon

San Luis Obispo residents have one day left to apply for affordable housing through HouseKeys before the application deadline, according to a the program administrator’s website.

The deadline for applications closes on Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 5 p.m., 10 days before the lottery drawing results are announced on Aug. 26.

There are 12 416-square-foot studio apartments at Summit Apartments at 790 E. Foothill Blvd. available only to very low income residents. Applicants must make less than 50% of the city of SLO’s annual median income, $38,300 for a single occupant and $43,800 for two, which is the maximum occupancy for these apartments.

HouseKeys has set the monthly rent at $956, though that figure is subject to change.

To meet the annual rent requirement, applicants must make $34,416 per year, or three times the rent over a span of 12 months. Section 8 housing vouchers are also accepted.

This essentially means that to qualify, applicants must make a minimum of $34,416 and a maximum of $38,300 for a single occupant and $43,800 for two occupants.

“The rent amount can change when the annual income limits and utility allowances schedules are updated on an annual basis,” the HouseKeys application instructions said.

Summit Apartments studio units feature amenities like furnishings, a washer and dryer unit and a smart TV. Utilities such as water, sewer, trash, gas, internet and electricity are included in the monthly rent.

The available units will only be shown to applicants selected in the Aug. 26 lottery.

Applicants must meet the following guidelines as described in the Opportunity Drawing Notification document published by the city.
