Nothing signifies the start of the Christmas season quite like picking out a live tree.

Luckily, there are many options in Tuscarawas and surrounding counties.

A fresh-cut Christmas tree typically lasts between four and six weeks. There are steps you can take to help your tree stay healthy throughout the holiday season.

Jean Polack, owner of Moore's Christmas Tree Farm in Marlboro Township, said it's important to make sure your live tree gets plenty of water, especially the first few days after you bring it home.

"(Christmas trees) shouldn't be near a heat source or in the bright sun or near air moving," she said. "That will really dry them out also."

Polack said some will put tree preservatives in the water in an effort to help them last longer. She said she advises against using soda or any sugar-based product as it could ferment and create a mildew-like odor.

"We feel just pure water is the best," she said.

Fir trees have great needle retention, Polack said, but some people have success with blue spruce trees, too.

"Most people have pretty good luck with their trees lasting through December," she said.
