Dogs have their day in Tumwater

Traditionally, the dog days of summer fall in July and August, but Tumwater is celebrating canine companions a little early with its new Dog Days, happening June 10. (Shouldn’t it be Dog Day?) Dogs and their people are invited to enjoy a 1K Doggie Walk (complete with treat stops), get their photos taken and compete in a costume contest and a pet/person look-alike contest. Attendees also can check out a demonstration by Tumwater Police Department’s K-9 unit and pick up some swag. “Dog Days (came) from the recognition of the role that our pets play in our lives, especially how they supported us throughout the COVID pandemic,” said Marisa Worden of Tumwater’s Parks & Recreation Department. “We wanted to create an event to celebrate the connection that we have to our pets and the positive contribution they make to our personal wellness.” The free festival happens from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Pioneer Park, 5801 Henderson Blvd. SE, Tumwater.
