School is back in session but the Jacksonville area's summer of fun just keeps rolling along. This weekend's slate includes a big-time hip hop show, a local music showcase, a new R&B and soul music festival at the Beaches, a beloved comedian and an important tune-up game for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Lil Wayne and Friends
Five-time Grammy winner Lil Wayne is bringing a bunch of friends to his Friday night concert at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. City Girls, Toosii, GloRilla, Big Charm, Bread and Bwoods are all on the bill for the show, which starts at 7 p.m. $89-$125.
Bill Bellamy at the Comedy Zone
Bill Bellamy is best known for his work as an actor ("Insecure," "Hot in Cleveland," "Meet the Browns," "Fastlane") and as an MTV host ("MTV Jamz," "MTV Beachhouse"), but the comedy stage is where he really shines — just watch his new stand-up special, "I Want My Life Back," if you don't believe that. Bellamy is at the Comedy Zone in Mandarin at 7:30 and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. $30-$40.
Album release party
Some of the Jacksonville area's biggest indie bands are getting together to release "Duval Heavy Hitters Vol. 1," a new compilation album. Cowford, Universal Green, Flag on Fire, Adversaries, SouthPaw.FLHC and Jax Beach Hippie are scheduled to play starting at 7 p.m. Saturday at 1904 Music Hall in downtown Jacksonville. $10-$15.
R&B Soul Fest
Seawalk Pavilion in Jacksonville Beach will be the home of the inaugural R&B Soul Music Festival, with live music, DJs, VIP tents and "an all-day soul healing experience." Sunshine Anderson, Adina Howard, Cupid, DJ Tony Neal and DJ Ekin will provide the music. It's free, and fans are encouraged to bring their own blankets, yoga mats and beach chairs. VIP tickets are also available, starting at $60. It starts at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Jaguars-Steelers preseason game
Excitement is building among Jaguars fans for the upcoming NFL season due to new players, new coaches and a whole new attitude. But will it work? See for yourself when the Jaguars play host to the Pittsburgh Steelers in an NFL preseason game at TIAA Bank Field. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Saturday. $48-$315.
