AVON — Looking for something a little different to do on a Friday or Saturday night? One doesn't have to venture far to have an enjoyable evening as Glen Jr. and Chrisa Anderson recently opened their Axcitement room Jan. 7.

The couple opened the room above the Storm Shelter, located in Avon at 102 N. Main Street. The room contains lanes where individuals can throw axes at a target.

The owners decided to open the room because this was something new, fun, and very addicting. The room was once a big, open room. It now has a gorgeous bar, a beautiful bathroom, and of course, lanes to throw axes. Everything in the room is new, from the walls, to the ceiling.

Throwing axes may sound a little scary, but Axcitment has rules that must be followed by all to ensure the safety of the players. Axes cannot be left unattended and they can't leave the cages. Also, axes must not be retrieved until both adjacent lanes have thrown their axes and axes have landed on the board or floor.

Underhand throws are also prohibited. It is important that the axes must be thrown over hand with one or two hands, and they should always be front facing when being thrown.

Those wishing to experience this need to be prepared, as there is a dress codes that needs to be followed to participate in the fun. Close toe shoes are required and one must remove baggy clothing items (such as scarves or shawls) before throwing. Those playing must be at least 16 or older (minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian).

If a player wishes to bring their own axe, a staff member will need to inspect it before it is used. The axe must not exceed 14 inches. Players are also not allowed to bring food or drinks into the cages and they are not allowed to be intoxicated at any point whiling throwing axes.

Players can enjoy the fun Friday and Saturday nights for $20/person from 6 p.m. until midnight by reserving a spot. Other times are available as early as noon by appointment only. To make an appointment, head to the Storm Shelter Facebook page and click on the Bookeo link or give the Shelter a call at (309) 975-1013.

Glen and Chrisa have provided fun for the Avon community for over five years. The Storm Shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily where food and drinks can be enjoyed. A lot of their food is made from scratch — homemade tenderloins, chicken sandwiches, french fries, sweet potato fries, mozzarella sticks, soups, and more can be consumed at the pub.

Customers can expect some upcoming changes at the pub as Glen and Chrisa are expanding the building by having a separate dining room and more pool tables where the dining is now.
