Looking at No. 1 Georgia’s biggest weaknesses

The Georgia Bulldogs are the unanimous No. 1 team in the country at the moment. Kirby Smart and Georgia is off to an excellent start to begin the 2021 college football season.

UGA is 6-0 and has only had one game within a touchdown in 2021. That contest was the the season opener against Clemson. Georgia won 10-3.

Georgia has outscored their opponents 239-33 through six games. The Dawgs have been dominant. Kirby Smart and UGA want to finish the season No. 1. They don’t care about the ranking in October.

So what are Georgia’s biggest weaknesses and areas to improve? The Bulldogs aren’t as flawed as other teams throughout the country, but they aren’t perfect.

Thus far, Georgia is No. 61 in the country in red zone offensive scoring percentage. Georgia’s offense needs to get more efficient in the red zone. The Bulldogs have scored touchdowns on only 17 of 29 trips to the red zone.

Passing the football remains something for Stetson Bennett, JT Daniels, and Georgia to work on. Georgia’s receiving core has been decimated by injuries, but the Dawgs have been forced into very few obvious passing situations.

Georgia has been productive in the passing game, yet they have never had to rely on it. In order for Todd Monken’s offense to reach its full potential, Georgia needs to be more dynamic passing the football.

One simple way Georgia can improve their passing game is by running more passing plays, especially in games that are out of reach.

On the defensive side of the ball, Georgia looks stout. The Bulldogs have the nation’s top-ranked defense through six games.

If we had to nit-pick areas to improve for the Georgia defense, then they would be: defending deep passing plays and depth at edge rusher. South Carolina burned the Dawgs on a few deep passes and Auburn had a double-move open last week.

Georgia’s passing defense hasn’t seen as many deep shots as opposing coaches would like due to UGA’s strong pass rush, which has 22 sacks.

Adam Anderson, Robert Beal, Travon Walker, and Nolan Smith are all productive edge rushers, but beyond that the Dawgs need to see improvement from young players like MJ Sherman and Chaz Chambliss in order to feel more secure about their depth at edge rusher.

Overall, Georgia football fans should be happy with how the team has begun the season. If UGA can strengthen a few of their weaknesses, then they will be in the thick of the championship race this year.
