March has come in like a lion, bringing with it a wealth of art, music, film, dance and more for you to get out and enjoy this weekend.

By popular demand, the "Wild Things Are Happening: The Art of Maurice Sendak" exhibit has been extended another two weeks, so hurry on over to the Columbus Museum of Art. Or if you prefer a little al fresco strolling with your art, check out the Parsons Avenue Winter Art Hop and Mural Tour.

Black artists are represented in film and dance events, while Mexican, Brazilian, French and Ukrainian music will be presented by local duo Flautango.

Early next week, writer Fran Lebowitz will appear at the Southern, and fitting for Women's History Month, the Westerville Public Library will host “What a Woman Can Do: Women Artists of the Columbus Museum of Art."

There's more time to see 'Wild Things'

The Columbus Museum of Art, 480 E. Broad St., has extended the popular “Wild Things Are Happening: The Art of Maurice Sendak” exhibition to March 19. The display showcases more than 150 sketches, storyboards and paintings by Sendak from the collection of The Maurice Sendak Foundation. Museum admission is $18 for adults; $9 for seniors (60-plus), students (18 and older) and children (4-17); free for members and children 3 and under. Admission to "Wild Things" is an additional $10. Admission is discounted on Thursdays from 5-9 p.m., with general admission and entrance to the special exhibition costing $5 each. Admission is free for all on Sundays. (columbusmuseum.org)

'Birthright' to conclude film series

The "Pioneers of African American Cinema" series at Gateway Film Center, 1550 N. High St., will wrap up with a showing of Oscar Micheaux's "Birthright" at 7 p.m. The 1938 film, a remake of Micheaux's now-lost 1924 film by the same title, centers on an idealistic young man who attempts to establish a school in a rural area but meets with opposition from both the Black and white communities. Art hop, mural tour set for Saturday on Parsons Avenue

Peruse a broad spectrum of works by local artists during the Parsons Avenue Winter Art Hop and Mural Tour hosted from 2-4 p.m. Saturday by Community Grounds: Coffee & Meeting House, 1134 Parsons Ave. Pieces will be available for purchase and a shuttle will be offered for the duration of the event. Library to offer tasty book selection

If you're seeking new reading material, come out to the Columbus Metropolitan Library Parsons Branch, 1113 Parsons Ave., for "A Library Book Tasting," at 4 p.m. Saturday. As part of the Columbus Metropolitan Library's sesquicentennial celebration, tables will be set up offering a variety of genres to check out. The event is free. In addition, the 150th birthday celebration will include parties at 22 of the 23 library branches on Saturday, with activities, refreshments and chances to win prizes including a $150 Target gift card. Black street dancers to perform

Local Black street dance culture and music will be the focus of The Gathering, a demonstration of dance genres indigenous to the Black diaspora taking place from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at Wild Goose Creative, 188 McDowell St. Among the purposes of the event is to align the work of the street dance community with that of the broader dance community. According to Isom, "Everyone is welcome to this gathering so we can continue building our dance community." General admission is $10. (instagram.com/mrdisom)

Columbus musicians to be showcased

Spirit of the Bear, Cousin Simple and Adam Paddock will share the headliner bill at Newport Music Hall, 1722 N. High St., on Saturday at Columbus Against the World, a celebration of the local music scene. Left Out also will perform. Doors open at 6 p.m. Presented by the Fairly Local Show from Alt. 105.7, the all-ages event will include giveaways, free t-shirts, unique photo opportunities and more. Tickets are $20. Tribute band to channel Nirvana

Put on your flannels and get grungy with Smells Like Nirvana and opening act Dead Original on Saturday at Rumba Cafe, 2507 Summit St. The Nirvana tribute band will perform songs from Nirvana’s albums, "Nevermind,” "In Utero,” and "Bleach" as well as B-sides and rare songs. Featuring a former member of the Grammy-nominated metal band Trivium, Dead Original will perform songs from its album "Bought and Sold." Flautango to present diverse program

Flautango, formed in the early 2000s to promote high-quality Latin American music, will present a program of traditional Mexican, Brazilian, French classical and Ukrainian tango music at First English Lutheran Church, 1015 E. Main St., at 3 p.m. Sunday. Featuring flutist Rodolfo Vazquez and guitarist Sean Ferguson, Flautango has performed with the Dayton Philharmonic, as well as venues including the Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio State University, the Ohio Statehouse, Ohio Theatre and more. Fran Lebowitz to share stories, thoughts

Enjoy an evening of sardonic social commentary with witty writer and opinionated orator Fran Lebowitz, who will come to the Southern Theatre, 21 E. Main St., at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Lebowitz's books include "Metropolitan Life" (1978) and "Social Studies" (1981), which were combined into "The Fran Lebowitz Reader" in 1994. She also has been the subject of two projects directed by Martin Scorsese, the HBO documentary film "Public Speaking" (2010) and the Netflix docu-series "Pretend It's a City" (2021). Discover 21 female artists dating from 1636 to the present during “What a Woman Can Do: Women Artists of the Columbus Museum of Art” at 6:30 p.m. March 9 at the Westerville Public Library, 126 S. State St. View the works of these painters, sculptors, photographers and multimedia artists from around the world and close to home, and learn about their lives, techniques and influences.
