Path of the Flood Trail

The Path of the Flood Trail is a 14.66-mile trail consisting of both off-road trail and public roadways. This historical trail enables visitors to begin at the breached South Fork Dam that follows the same watercourse that floodwaters took in 1889. The Path of the Flood Trail has been under construction since 2001 and is now officially complete. This experience takes trail users along the entire course of the 1889 Johnstown Flood. Trail users may now enter the beginning of the trail from South Abutment Road and will loop around the lakebed. They'll walk through the site of the dam where floodwaters broke and continue along the Conemaugh River before turning left up a steep incline to access Amsite Road. From here, trail users will cross Ragers Hill Road to enter the Stineman portion of the Path of the Flood Trail. The Path of the Flood Trail provides numerous trail-side markers that tell the story and enables users to visualize the scene within the Little Conemaugh River Valley. From the trail, visitors may access the Johnstown Flood National Memorial Lake View Visitor Center, Staple Bend Tunnel, Johnstown Flood Museum and the historic Stone Bridge. For more information and a detailed map for the Path of the Flood Trail, and other trails managed by Cambria County Conservation & Recreation Authority, visit www.cambriaconservationrecreation.com.
