Explore Narragansett Bay or one of RI's rivers via kayak

Kayaking offers a way to really explore the region's waterways, as it's quiet enough to not scare away the wildlife and a small enough vessel to fit into tight spaces.

If you don't have a kayak, the Kayak Centre in North Kingstown offers several different tours, including sunset paddles, moonrise paddles, paddles combined with wine tastings, and, in the colder months, when the seals are around, even seal tours.

If you do have a kayak, there are lots of places around the state to put in. The reader who suggested kayaking recommended the Narrow River, the Blackstone River, the Wood River, the Pawcatuck River and, in Massachusetts, the Westport River.

Head to Block Island for the day

When it came to Block Island, a reader had a lot to say about all the adventures someone could have there.

There's nature to explore, including Mohegan Bluffs, Clay Head Trail and Rodman's Hollow. There are seals basking on the rocks and great birding. There are 28 miles of walking trails, bike trails and beaches to bask on, all for free.

In a slightly less conventional free activity, people can also hunt for the glass orbs that are hidden around the island. The Glass Float Project begins its hunt on June 3 this year, and if you find one of the orbs, it makes an excellent souvenir to bring home with you.
