Looking to get your sports fix indoors this winter? Here are some options in Sacramento

Wet weather returning to the Sacramento region this winter means those looking to stay active are more likely to do so indoors than when the area saw more dry conditions throughout the last decade.

Fortunately for locals, there are plenty of climate controlled options for adults and children looking to take sports seriously or simply get out of the house to get a sweat in.

Let’s take a look at some indoor options for adults and kids to get their exercise fix this winter and beyond, not including your typical exercise gyms.

Andy Morin Sports Complex

The Andy Morin Sports Complex in Folsom offers an array of indoor sports available for drop in, including soccer, table tennis, pickleball, volleyball, basketball and the use of batting cages (though users are asked to bring their own helmets and bats). There’s also an indoor pitcher’s mound available for prospective hurlers.

Just off E. Bidwell St. in Folsom, the giant warehouse-sized building houses an indoor soccer field with boards similar to a hockey rink, along with two full sized basketball courts. It also has seven pickleball courts available.

Derik Perez, who manages the public facility and is a recreation supervisor for the city of Folsom, said things often pick up in the winter when the weather turns cold and wet.

“Just having the flexibility knowing that if it’s raining outside they can come in and practice baseball or softball in our batting cages or pitching tunnel, or shoot around with their kids if they wanted to,” Perez said. “For drop in play, we’re open seven days a week usually which is really nice. It’s flexible. (We’re open) late in the night when we run leagues and rentals too.”

No membership fees are required, just drop-in fees for daily use. Most of the sports are $5 for two hours, per person, while the batting cages require tokens which cost $2.50 for 20 balls, while prepaid cards and longer cage rentals are also available.

XOSO Sport and Social League

XOSO is like intramural co-ed sports for adults, including basketball, kickball, bocce ball, bowling, cornhole, flag football, soccer softball, ultimate Frisbee and volleyball, including options that can be played indoors this winter. XOSO has roughly 20,000 people sign up in Sacramento each year, operating some 180 leagues, and is expanding operations into Rocklin.

“Our goal is to create community through sports and help people make friends and network while getting out and exercising,” XOSO founder Nick Berruezo said.

XOSO’s website asks, “Who says adults can have recess?” and works to add a social element to its sports leagues with team events at local breweries and watering holes. It also differentiates teams and leagues by skill level.

Cost is dependent on the sport. People can sign up as an individual or start their own teams. Or, smaller groups of friends can registered together and be grouped on the same team. Berruezo said XOSO is particularly good for people who are new to town and looking to make friends.

Indoor sports offered this winter include volleyball and bowling. Soccer, kick ball, ultimate Frisbee and flag football are among their offerings in the spring.
