Looking to stay cool and save as PA energy bills rise this summer? Follow these tips

Summer heat has arrived and air conditioners are cranking as electric prices jump across Pennsylvania. But there are ways to stay cool this summer while keeping costs under control.

Here are some tips from the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.

How to stay cool

  • Use a fan to circulate the air, which helps you feel cooler

  • Avoid rooms that receive direct sunlight

  • Use window blinds and coverings when the sun is the brightest

  • Delay using heat-producing appliances, such as clothes dryers, dishwashers and stoves until it is cooler.

  • Cook with an outdoor grill or microwave. Skip the stove and the oven, which add indoor heat.

How to save energy and money

  • Keep the indoor temperature as close as possible to the outdoor temperature. The smaller the difference, the lower your overall cooling bill

  • Clean and replace air conditioner filters regularly

  • Turn off unneeded appliances and lights to reduce power use and unwanted heat

  • Close off unused rooms and adjust air vents to avoid unnecessary cooling expenses

  • Seal cracks to prevent warm air from leaking into your home

How to get help paying bills

Consumers should contact their utility provider to learn about the programs available to help pay energy bills, the PUC said.
