Loons captain Wil Trapp exits D.C. United game with injury

Minnesota United defensive midfielder Wil Trapp injured his hamstring Saturday.

“It’s not good at this moment in time,” manager Adrian Heath said postgame. The full severity of Trapp’s setback will become known in the next few days.

The Loons captain went to conduct a routine pass down the left sideline in the 18th minute versus D.C. United, but he landed awkwardly despite no contact with an opponent. He fell to the grass, smacked the ground and immediately called for medical attention.

Head athletic trainer Donnie Fuller assessed Trapp’s left hamstring. Trapp exited the field along the sideline opposite the Loons’ bench and locker rooms. He moved slowly, needing assistance from trainers, and made it as far as the southeast tunnel before he rode a medical cart the rest of the way for further tests. He was on crutches within the stadium postgame.

Trapp exited in the 83rd minute of Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City. Heath characterized that departure as a cramp. Before midweek, Trapp played three straight 90-minute shifts since June 29; the run came after he was suspended for yellow-card accumulation against Inter Miami on June 25.

Trapp has played in 18 of Minnesota’s 21 games this season. Joseph Rosales replaced Trapp on Saturday.

This is another loss for MNUFC’s midfield. Hassani Dotson suffered a season-ending knee injury in April, and Kervin Arriaga has suffered ligament damage in his ankle against L.A. Galaxy on June 29. Heath said Friday Arriaga will be out at least another week.

With the other absences, attacker Robin Lod has been filling in at midfield.

Minnesota’s next MLS game is Saturday at Houston Dynamo.
