Loons sign backup goalkeeper Clint Irwin to two-year deal

Minnesota United has found its new backup goalkeeper.

The Loons have signed veteran Clint Irwin to a two-year contact with a club option for 2025, the club announced Tuesday.

Irwin, 33, has been a member of the Colorado Rapids for the last three seasons, with a total of 16 MLS games played but only one in 2021 as the backup to William Yarbrough.

MNUFC wasn’t able to trade last year’s backup Tyler Miller and as Miller hit free agency, they weren’t able to negotiate a lower salary figure. Miller, who made $445,938 in 2021, signed with D.C. United in November, and Minnesota needed to find a depth piece behind Dayne St. Clair.

Irwin will be on the Loons’ senior roster and received $213,300 Lin guaranteed compensation ast season, according to the MLS Players’ Association. His new salary is not yet known, but it is considered a “budget friendly acquisition,” a source told the Pioneer Press.

Irwin, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, has bounced between MSL and USL in his 10-year career. After coming up from Elon University and then USL League Two, he had three years with the Rapids in 2013-15, followed by three years with Toronto FC in 2016-18. The Charlotte, N.C., native has allowed 1.60 goals per 90 minutes across his 228 career games, according to fbref.com.
