Lopsided UGA win, but still some 'WTFs'

Kirby Smart’s behind the scenes locker room language has been known to get a little salty.

It turns out the Georgia football coaching staff uses an acronym to describe play that makes them say what the heck. Or something a little more R-rated.

“We call them WTFs,” Smart said on Monday. “There's, like, a lot of things that are, like, Why did you do that? You didn't do that all year.”

Maybe it’s an internal staff thing because one defensive player wasn’t up to speed with the acronym.

“WTF?” inside linebacker Trezman Marshall said looking stumped.

Told that Smart used that to describe mistakes that Georgia’s freshmen made in the 48-3 beatdown of Oregon on Saturday.

“Oh, man, WTF” Marshall said with a big smile. “I didn’t have none of those.”

With Georgia leaning on freshmen including defensive end starter Mykel Williams and safety Malaki Starks, Smart said the group as a whole had plenty to improve on.

“The most obvious is there was a lot of mistakes,” he said. “I mean, mistakes that even they'll tell you. …The largest growth for those guys is game one, two, three in terms of reaction to their mistakes. And, you know, what makes a guy -- I've always wondered, you know, who's going to sell the potion that allows a player not to make the most glaring mistake, things that you repped a lot. And you have those in the first game. I've come to accept them. It's more what's your response is to them. We'll get to find out what those young freshmen's responses are this week.”

There should be plenty of chances for the young guys to get playing time Saturday against Samford.

Checking on weekly picks

The good news is I did pretty well—12-2-for our USA Today Sports weekly straight up picks for SEC teams. The newsletter picks weren’t as hot against the spread.

I nailed Michigan against Colorado State with a huge 51-7 victory. I figured the first game out would be a big ask for Billy Napier’s Florida team to hang tight with a good Utah squad. Consider me impressed with Florida’s 29-26 victory. And I’ve learned the lesson to don’t underestimate Sam Pittman at Arkansas. The Razorbacks covered against Cincinnati.
