‘Lord of the Rings’ star Elijah Wood producing reboot of ‘Max Headroom’ series

Max Headroom is getting rebooted.

The subversive 1980s-era ABC series about the world’s first computer-generated TV presenter is in the works for basic cable, produced by “Lord of the Rings” star Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision production company.

According to Deadline, “Halt and Catch Fire” co-creator Christopher Cantwell is attached to write the script for the show centered around the ahead-of-its-time Artificial Intelligence character created by George Stone, Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton.

Matt Frewer, who starred as the titular character in the futuristic dystopia-set drama, will reportedly reprise his role and co-produce the reboot.

In its Reagan Era heyday, Max Headroom appeared as a spokesperson for New Coke and collaborated with Art of Noise on the 1986 top 40 hit song “Paranoimia.” The character was originally created to introduce music videos on Channel 4 in the U.K.

The show “Max Headroom” ran for two seasons on ABC, with Frewer playing both the supposedly artificially intelligent character and also its journalist alter ego Edison Carter.

The character has lived on in pop culture, with references in movies such as Mel Brooks “Space Balls,” the TV shows “Family Matters” and “Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and by music artists including Eminem and Neil Young.
