Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden's latest ads take direct aim at swing states and Latinx Americans across the country. Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny is backing the former vice president and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) in the 2020 election, and lent one of his hits to a new ad for the Democrats. The ad features footage of excited President Trump fans in 2016 juxtaposed with a sparsely attended recent rally, as well as Trump's Bible photo-op and that time he hugged and kissed a flag.
Becki Falwell had a sexual encounter with one of her son's 22-year-old Liberty University classmates in 2008 and pursued him for months after, Politico reports. The former student told the outlet that he and Trey Falwell were in a rock band together, and while the former student stayed in a guest room the Falwells' house after a rehearsal, Becki Falwell entered his room and began to perform oral sex on him. The bandmate also said Becki Falwell would flirt with the student during band practices while her son was present.
Claim: Says Jacob Blake 'declared he had a gun in the car and was going to go get it' and was 'brandishing' a knife. As we wait for a full Wisconsin Department of Justice report on the Jacob Blake shooting, speculation has run rampant online about whether the 29-year-old Kenosha man was armed — and with what — in the moments before a Kenosha police officer shot him seven times in the back. The lack of detailed information from law enforcement has only added to the speculation.
Over the last three months in Portland, mass protests against police violence and racism gradually gave way to nightly often violent standoffs between a core of pro-Black Lives Matter and anti-fascist protesters and law enforcement. But in the past week the city has fallen back into a pattern of more politically polarized street violence which has marked the city throughout the Trump era, with broadly leftwing and anti-fascist activists sometimes facing off against far-right groups. Last weekend a rightwing “Say no to Marxism in America” rally saw serious, widespread violence.
The Fox News anchor Chris Wallace pushed back against panelists on a talk show on Thursday after one pundit appeared to justify vigilante justice at the Kenosha protests by blaming Wisconsin's leadership. "On the argument of vigilante justice, when you have no police around to defend businesses and people who are being attacked and their livelihoods burned to the ground, then there is a void that is filled," Katie Pavlich said. Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, of Antioch, Illinois, is accused of shooting and killing two protesters and injuring a third person earlier this week.
Sen. Thom Tillis said Friday he "fell short" for not wearing a mask or urging his fellow attendees at the Republican National Convention to do so. Tillis (R-N.C.) has been a vocal proponent of wearing masks to prevent the spread of coronavirus and posted a picture of himself as one of the few people wearing one during President Donald Trump's keynote speech Thursday night. Tillis' zeal for enforcing masks has landed him in hot water in the past.
The police officer who authorities say shot Jacob Blake seven times Sunday in Kenosha, Wisconsin, said he had always wanted to be in law enforcement. The officer, Rusten Sheskey, a seven-year veteran of the Kenosha Police Department, held Blake's shirt during an arrest and opened fire as he tried to get in a vehicle, state Attorney General Josh Kaul said Wednesday. Blake remains in stable condition in a hospital, though his family's lawyers and his father say he is paralyzed from the waist down.
Hello Nana and Omar? Although the remnants of Hurricane Laura are still drenching parts of the eastern U.S. Friday, there are already concerns about more storms stirring in the Atlantic Ocean. Santa Cruz County Sheriff Jim Hart announced Thursday that a man has been arrested for the theft of a firefighter's wallet.
The final night of the Republican convention, which featured President Trump's acceptance speech from the White House South Lawn, had an average audience of 21.6 million viewers Thursday, putting it behind the TV turnout for his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden. The early number from Nielsen that includes ABC, CBS, NBC, Telemundo, Univision and the three major cable news networks is 8% lower than the comparable figure for Biden's speech at his convention on Aug. 20. The final total for Trump's speech out later today will be slightly higher, as it includes PBS and other networks that carried the speech.
An Iranian has been sentenced to nine years in jail for beheading his teenaged daughter in her sleep, local media reported Friday, adding that the mother wants him executed. The so-called "honour" killing of 14-year-old Romina Ashrafi on May 21 sparked widespread outrage, with media condemning "institutionalised violence" in the Islamic republic. Media said Romina was decapitated at the family home in the village of Talesh in the northern province of Gilan.
India's deepest recession on record will linger through the rest of this year and begin to lift only in early 2021 as a rapid surge in the coronavirus spread squelches a nascent rebound in consumption and business activity, a Reuters poll showed. New Delhi has already set aside $266 billion of economic rescue spending and the Reserve Bank of India has slashed interest rates by 115 basis points since March, suggesting more is required to shield the economy from the pandemic-induced disruptions to businesses and livelihoods. The coronavirus is spreading faster in India than anywhere else in the world, with more than 3.3 million people already infected and related deaths at over 60,000.
A Texas school district has reversed its decision to place a teacher on leave over Black Lives Matter, feminist and pro-LGBTQ posters displayed on the walls of her virtual classroom. Taylor Lifka, an English teacher at the Roma High School in Roma, a border town of about 10,000 people, was placed on administrative leave Sunday after parents complained about the posters. Speaking to NBC News, Lifka, 25, said the experience of having national attention turned toward her small classroom has been “overwhelming.”
Released right before the start of the final night of the Republican National Convention, the Lincoln Project's latest ad, "Decency," calls out President Trump for his mocking of a disabled reporter. The ad begins with footage of the first time Democratic nominee Joe Biden met Brayden Harrington, a 13-year-old from New Hampshire who went on to speak at last week's Democratic National Convention. Harrington's dad told Biden his son wanted to meet him because he has a stutter, and knew that Biden had one as a child.
Charges filed Thursday in Kenosha County Court in a complaint detail how Rittenhouse used an AR-15-style rifle to shoot and kill Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, and Anthony Huber, 26, and injure Gaige Grosskreutz, 26, shortly before midnight along Sheridan Road, where protesters went after being expelled from Civic Center Park during clashes with law enforcement. Here is what we know about the victims: Anthony Huber, 26, of Silver Lake Friends described Huber as a happy and laid-back guy who loved to skateboard. "He was always a really sweet person.
California will begin issuing $300 a week in supplemental unemployment benefits on September 7, after the state's application for $4.5 billion in aid from FEMA was approved. Congress is still deadlocked on a long-term stimulus package, which includes supplemental unemployment benefits. The California Employment Development Department announced last week that the state's application for $4.5 billion in supplemental unemployment benefits has been approved.
A judge ordered an Iowa county Thursday to invalidate 50,000 requests for absentee ballots, agreeing with President Donald Trump's campaign that its elections commissioner overstepped his authority by pre-filling them with voters' personal information. Judge Ian Thornhill issued a temporary injunction ordering Linn County Auditor Joel Miller to notify voters in writing that the forms should not have been pre-filled with their information and cannot be processed. Instead, they'll have to either fill out new requests for absentee ballots or vote on Election Day.
After finding a 13-year-old girl from Memphis, Tennessee, who has been missing for nearly a year, Biscayne Park police and other authorities have possibly found her missing sister and arrested their mother. Biscayne Park Detective Rodney Schwartz rode his police motorcycle over to Griffin Boulevard early Tuesday morning after being told about a young girl who was “wandering aimlessly.” When he found her, Sandra Bates, 13, was barefoot and disheveled and had that “thousand-yard stare,” Schwartz said.
