One woman was killed and several people injured when a lorry drove into a group of pedestrians in the south-eastern German city of Passau on Friday, police said.

Police said an initial investigation pointed to the crash in Passau's city centre as being an accident. The driver was taken to hospital with injuries.

Four other people were seriously injured, including the 11-year-old daughter of the woman who died at the scene.

The site was cordoned off after the crash took place at around 9:50 am (0850 GMT), with numerous police, fire and ambulance crews responding.

A police spokeswoman was unable to confirm German media reports that the truck had driven into a shop window. Further details such as the speed of the truck and the ages of the other people involved were not immediately provided.

Passau, home to some 50,000 residents, sits on the border with Austria.
