Angels catcher Kurt Suzuki OK after taking baseball to neck, passing out vs. Blue Jays

Los Angeles Angels catcher Kurt Suzuki is fine after a terrifying incident during a game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday night caused him to pass out in the tunnel and spend a few hours in the hospital.

In the third inning of the Angels’ 6-5 loss to the Jays on Saturday night in Anaheim, Suzuki was out taking warm-up pitches with starter Michael Lorenzen. One of those pitches bounced off the ground and hit Suzuki right under his mask in the neck.

The 38-year-old was noticeably shook up, and was helped off the field slowly by the team’s training staff. He struggled to walk down the dugout stairs, and revealed Sunday that he passed out.

Suzuki was taken to a local hospital before he was released hours later and returned to the stadium. He said Sunday that he’s available for the last game in the series against the Blue Jays, and that his “biggest fear was making a big scene out of it,” per The Los Angeles Times.

Suzuki is in his second season with the Angels, and is playing on a one-year, $1.75 million deal. The Angels mark the fifth team for the veteran catcher following stints with the Oakland A’s, Washington Nationals, Minnesota Twins and Atlanta Braves.
