Los Angeles County train cargo thefts spike: Union Pacific CEO on the trend

Cargo theft from freight trains in Los Angeles County have seen a sharp increase during COVID. The Union Pacific CEO Lance Fritz weighs in on the trend, and countermeasures the company will be undertaking.

LANCE FRITZ: The criminals there have turned from two, three years ago, a theft event every now and then. It was one off, an opportunity crime. Now it's an orchestrated, organized crime. We've got good cooperation with the governor's office. We're partnering with LAPD. They've amped up their presence with us. We've amped up our use of technology, like drones, to be a deterrent and to help collect evidence.

We're also going to be making capital investment in physical barriers, whether it's metal, a security fence, razor wire, or concrete barriers. You know, it's sad to say that we're going to have to do those kinds of investments, but we've got to keep our employees safe and our customers' lading safe.
