Supporters of Britney Spears gathered outside the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in Los Angeles, California, on Wednesday, July 14, to rally against her conservatorship ahead of a hearing scheduled on the same day.

Spears was granted the right to hire her own lawyer during Wednesday’s pre-scheduled court hearing when Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny approved former federal prosecutor Mathew Rosengart to represent the singer, the Los Angeles Times reported. Rosengart’s request that Britney’s father, Jamie P Spears, step down as her conservator was rejected.

In 2008, Jamie Spears was granted control over his daughter’s personal and financial affairs in a court-ordered conservatorship.

Britney Spears appealed for an end to the conservatorship on June 23, addressing a Los Angeles judge during the case’s first hearing.
