Los Angeles man suspected of kidnapping woman in Adelanto

Journee Buchanan-Williams, 12, suffered fatal injuries when a vehicle struck her as she walked across Highway 18 in Apple Valley, sheriff’s officials reported.

A 30-year-old Los Angeles man was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping a woman at an Adelanto apartment complex, sheriff’s officials said.

At 11:27 a.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a 911 call in the 18000 block of Montezuma Street in Adelanto. A woman told deputies that she was walking past an apartment complex when the suspect, later identified as Tyvell Thomas, grabbed her from behind and started dragging her toward the complex, according to sheriff's officials.

The woman said she fought with Thomas and continued to yell for him to let her go. The suspect continued to drag her roughly 15 feet before a witness started yelling at him and he let her go, sheriff’s officials said.

Thomas then walked into the apartment complex and the victim lost sight of him.

While deputies were interviewing the woman outside the complex, Thomas exited the apartment and was arrested. He is also accused of spitting on a deputy, while being taken to jail, authorities said.

Thomas was booked into the High Desert Detention Center, with bail set at $80,000.
