Fan tackled after rushing at Ogwumike sisters on court following Sparks’ playoff win

A man sprinted at Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike on the floor while holding something in his hand, though was quickly brought down by security.

A man in a Houston Rockets jersey was tackled by security at the Staples Center on Sunday afternoon after he sprinted at Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike during their postgame interview following the Los Angeles Sparks’ playoff win against the Seattle Storm.

Nneka had just finished an interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe at midcourt after leading the Sparks past the Storm 92-69 in the elimination playoff game, and went to celebrate with her sister, Chiney.

As the two started to walk off the court, Chiney noticed the fan sprinting on to the court and quickly grabbed her sister, pulling her back and stepping in front of her. The fan, who was holding something in his hand, reached out before a pair of Staples Center security guards caught up with him and slammed him to the floor hard.

Nneka, who dropped 17 points and shot 6 of 12 from the field in the win, said she had no idea what the incident was about after the game.

“I don’t know who that was. I have no idea who that was,” Nneka said. “I think he was just a very enthusiastic fan that maybe got caught up in the moment, but we have the security in place to manage those situations and diffuse those situations.”

Enthusiastic is one way to describe the fan, who was seen doing pushups on the floor earlier during the game.

Thankfully, security caught the fan before he reached the Ogwumikes.
