A lot of dirt and machinery mark progress on Triway Local's school building project

Triway Local Schools Board of Education

Monday, Aug. 22, meeting

KEY ACTION Superintendent Nathan Shindewolf gave an update on the pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade building project, much of which is visible on the Triway Junior High and High School campus.

DISCUSSION "There is machinery all over the place and a lot of dirt," Schindewolf said, as early site work is underway.

Work is being done where the building pad will be located and also along state Route 226, where a new parking lot will be constructed.

The next big step will require extensive communication about new traffic flow, new parking and who parks where, Schindewolf said.

"There's a lot going on right now," he said, adding, "It has been a long wait, but now (the project) is generating some excitement."

New wellness center is separate construction project

The completion of the one-campus building isn't the only new structure the district is anticipating.

While the main building is being funded in partnership with the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC), a new wellness center will be constructed as a separate project using ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) federal funding.

The board approved a separate contract with GPD architect services to work on this project, which will be a pre-engineered building.

Schindewolf said the wellness center will be available during non-school hours; and will offer space for school offices, before- and after-school care and weekend activities, as well as provide space for district partners such as Akron Children's Hospital and OHuddle. It will also be used for professional development.

The building will be located north of the bus loop by the bus garage.

Schindewolf said he is excited that the community will be able to benefit from using the multi-purpose and flexible features of the future wellness building.

The round of ESSER funds to be used for the auxiliary building must be spent by December, 2024.

FOR YOUR INFO The board recognized Hannah Schlauch, a Triway High School graduate, for winning the gold medal at the recent SkillUSA National Conference in Atlanta. "It's quite an accomplishment," Schindewolf said, describing Schlauch as "well-spoken and polished." She is working as a full-time LPN "right out of high school."

Mike Kahoe, the Northeast Ohio Regional Liaison for Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, was on hand to present Schlauch with a state proclamation signed by Husted and Gov. Mike Dewine saying, "Your hard work and commitment to success has paid off, and we are pleased to recognize you in earning this achievement."

UP NEXT Meets at 6 p.m. Sept. 19 in Wooster Township Elementary School, 1071 Dover Road, Wooster.
