Lottery player carries lucky coin ‘at all times.’ Now he’s crediting big win to it
A Pennsylvania man is attributing his big win on a Powerball ticket to his lucky coin, Maryland lottery officials say.
The 51-year-old construction manager stopped in Carroll County, Maryland, for lunch and grabbed a lottery ticket from Piper’s Wine and Spirit Barn in Manchester, according to a Sept. 26 Maryland Lottery news release. The man said in the release he plays “two to three times a week in both Maryland and Pennsylvania.”
He returned home to Pennsylvania with his ticket for the Sept. 23 Powerball drawing in hand. That ticket ended up being worth $50,000.
“I was only one number away from the jackpot. I had 8 instead of 12,” the Adams County resident said in the release.
What might be the reason for the man’s luck, he said in the release, was his lucky 50-cent coin. He keeps it in his pocket “at all times,” he said.
The man’s first order of business with his prize money is to “upgrade his central air conditioning unit at his home,” the release says. The rest of the money will go into savings.
Manchester is about 40 miles northwest of Baltimore. Adams County, which includes Gettysburg, borders Maryland to the north.
What to know about Powerball
To score a jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.
The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.
Tickets cost $2 and can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times vary by state.
Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.
Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
