Lottery player discovers win while waiting for car repair — and holds in a big scream

A lucky lottery player “remained calm” and held in a big scream when she realized she won a nearly $1 million jackpot prize in Maryland.

The woman checked lottery tickets while she was at an auto shop waiting for her car to be repaired, the Maryland Lottery said in a Jan. 11 release.

One of those tickets was a FAST PLAY Extreme Green game that cost $20, and it revealed a jackpot symbol, scoring the woman $953,280.

But she didn’t let anyone around her at the shop know she was excited, lottery officials said.

“When I got alone in the car, I grabbed the steering wheel and let it out. I started to scream and thanked my mom in heaven,” the woman told lottery officials.

The computer analyst was in the process of retiring when she bought the winning ticket in October.

Now she has plans to put some of the money toward her retirement, lottery officials said.

“I am happy that it came to me at this time,” she said.

She lives in Windsor Mill, which is about 10 miles northwest of Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
