Lottery win leaves man triple-checking his lucky SC ticket. ‘It’s unbelievable’

A lottery player took a second look at his lucky ticket — then needed to check it a third time to make sure he hit the jackpot.

“It’s unbelievable,” the $75,000 prize winner told the South Carolina Education Lottery in an April 20 news release.

The man was left in shock after a trip to Speedee Mart in Clinton, a Laurens County town roughly 45 miles southeast of Greenville. While at the convenience store, officials said he bought a drink and spent $3 on a ticket for the Crossword Tripler scratch-off game.

After the man scratched off his crossword-themed ticket, he said he spent time triple checking all the words on it. It turns out, the ticket beat 1-in-600,000 odds to score the game’s top prize.

But the man didn’t waste much time basking in his big win, which totaled $52,125 after taxes.

“I’ve spent it,” said the lucky lottery player, who wasn’t identified in the news release.

It’s not the first time someone needed a closer look to confirm a South Carolina jackpot prize. Another man stared at his ticket over and over before he reached for his glasses and a bright light, McClatchy News reported in February.
