Louisville City FC's Jonathan Gómez will conclude his time in Louisville with a significant honor: USL Championship Young Player of the Year.

The 18-year old left back, who came to LouCity as a 16 year old in March 2020, has blossomed over the past year-and-a-half. He was recently named to the USL Championship's All-League First Team — defender Sean Totsch was also picked to the first team and forward Cameron Lancaster was voted to the second team — after a strong campaign for Louisville.

Gómez helped LouCity reach a seventh-consecutive appearance in the Eastern Conference Final, where it ultimately lost to Tampa Bay.

“I think it’s a testament to not only what I’ve done but what we did here as a team at LouCity,” Gómez said of the award in a statement Tuesday. “Obviously, we didn’t end how we wanted, but I think we still had a strong season. I’m proud of my individual performances, and it’s an honor to collect this accolade knowing how many quality young players there are in the league.”

Gómez trained with the Mexican national team this past year and was also named to the U.S. preliminary roster for the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup. He received 22 percent of the vote for the USL Championship's Young Player of the Year, placing first among the 19 players who received a vote and becoming the first LouCity player to win the award.

Background: LouCity's Jonathan Gómez set for transfer to La Liga's Real Sociedad after USL season

LouCity announced in late September that the club had agreed to a transfer with Real Sociedad, a prestigious club which competes in La Liga, the highest level of soccer in Spain, and Gómez will soon head overseas.

“I’m looking forward to just getting over there, getting started and seeing where it can take me,” Gomez stated. “I’ll be in Spain in one to two weeks and hopefully getting to know my teammates before I can start playing in January.”
