As a state cross-country athlete, sophomore Tess Shultz is used to winning distance races for Loudonville High School, but this time she ran past other FFA members in the Ohio FFA grain merchandising preliminary exam.

Shultz earned third place in the state, according to a news release, the highest placing ever recorded by a Loudonville FFA member.

On Jan. 31, Shultz and more than 450 other Ohio FFA members participated in an online test consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions worth 1 point each and 10 multiple-choice mathematical problem-solving questions worth 5 points each about commodities and their future’s market, hedgers and speculators during a 55-minute online exam.

Other agriculture business management classmates and team members included senior Emma Burkhalter and sophomores Cole Mellor, AJ Bell, Owen Moffett and Carlee Young. They earned 20th overall — not high enough for Ohio’s final heat, according to the release.
