Louisiana baseball lands Coastal Carolina transfer catcher Clay Wargo

Louisiana baseball needed depth behind the plate and it found some in Clay Wargo.

The Coastal Carolina sophomore catcher announced his intention to transfer to UL late last week.

Wargo's decision marked the second transfer from a South Carolina DI school last week to land with the Ragin' Cajuns, joining senior pitcher Jerry Couch from Charleston Southern.

The Huntingtown, Maryland, native has thee years of eligibility remaining, providing UL coach Matt Deggs and his team lengthy stability at a thin position in catcher.

Julian Brock played in all 59 games last season for Louisiana, starting 57 of those. Graduate senior Austin Garrett started those two other games in place of Brock. Garrett played in just 12 total games in 2022.

Finding a player ready to come in and spell Brock for the some games was one of the top priorities for Deggs in this recruiting cycle.

Wargo's first college at-bat will come with the Cajuns as he hasn't seen the field in the two years he's played at Coastal Carolina, playing behind two upperclassmen that split time catching.

Out of Huntingtown High School, Wargo was a four-time Perfect Game Preseason All-American Honorable Mention. He was rated the third-best catcher and 19th overall prospect in Maryland in the 2020 class.
